What marble is
Marble is a metamorphic stone formed from limestone. It is softer than granite or quartzite, takes a beautiful polish or hone, and carries the veining that every marble-look material is trying to imitate.
Where it shines
- Bathroom vanities. Lower traffic and no cooking acids make vanities the ideal place for marble.
- Slab backsplashes. A full-height marble backsplash behind a range gives a kitchen its focal point while the counters stay in a harder stone.
- Furniture and statement pieces. Islands, bar tops, and fireplace surrounds where patina is welcome.
What to know
- Marble etches: acids like lemon, vinegar, and wine dull the polish where they sit. Honed marble hides etching better than polished.
- It scratches more easily than granite or quartzite.
- We seal marble at installation and recommend resealing regularly. Clean with warm soapy water or a stone-safe cleaner only.

Is marble a good kitchen countertop?
It can be, if you accept that it will etch and develop a patina. For a marble look with less maintenance, many clients choose quartzite for the counters and marble for the backsplash.
Honed or polished marble?
Honed marble has a matte finish that hides etching and fingerprints better. Polished shows more depth and color but shows wear sooner.
How do I clean marble?
Warm soapy water or a cleaner made for natural stone. Never anything acidic or abrasive, and no bleach products.
