What quartzite is

Quartzite is a natural metamorphic stone: sandstone that was compressed and heated over time until the quartz grains fused. The result is one of the hardest natural countertop materials available, with soft veining and movement that reads like marble.

Why homeowners choose it

• Heat and scratch resistance. Harder than granite; hot pans and knives are far less of a worry than on marble or engineered quartz.
• The marble look without the etching. Most quartzites do not react to lemon, vinegar, or wine the way marble does.
• Warm, quiet color. Taj Mahal, the quartzite in our Plano kitchen, has an ivory ground with soft taupe veining that works with white oak, white, and navy cabinetry alike.

What to know

• Quartzite is porous, so we seal it at installation and recommend periodic resealing.
• Every slab is different. We match veining across the island, the perimeter, and a full-height backsplash so the run reads as one piece.
• Some stones sold as "soft quartzite" are actually marble or dolomite. We tell you what the slab is before you buy it.
