What quartz is
Quartz countertops are engineered: ground natural quartz bound with resin and pigment, pressed into slabs. Because the color is made rather than quarried, every slab of a given pattern matches, and the surface is non-porous.
Why homeowners choose it
- No sealing, ever. The resin binder makes quartz non-porous. Wipe it with warm soapy water and you are done.
- Consistent color. Bianco, Carrara, and Borghini patterns give a clean marble-inspired look without the variation of natural stone.
- Stain resistance. Coffee, wine, and oil sit on the surface instead of soaking in.
What to know
- Quartz is not for outdoor use; sun can discolor the resin over time.
- Keep very hot pans off the surface. Use a trivet.
- Quartz shower walls, like the Borghini slab walls in our Plano primary bath, replace grout lines with a single wipe-down surface.

Does quartz need to be sealed?
No. Engineered quartz is non-porous and never needs sealing.
Can quartz go outdoors?
We do not recommend it. UV exposure can discolor the resin. Granite or quartzite are better outdoor choices.
Can quartz be used on shower walls?
Yes. Slab shower walls in quartz give you a seamless, groutless surface. Our Plano primary bath uses Borghini quartz.
